Dr Damon Stanwell-Smith
Damon read marine biology at Swansea University, then worked for the British Antarctic Survey for five years. He completed a PhD (1997) on marine ecology during a two winter tour at Signy base, South Orkneys, Antarctica as a biologist/diver. In 1997 Damon joined the Society for Environmental Exploration, spending five years running the research programme of their remote field projects in Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and Vietnam.

Damon is the author of numerous scientific papers, a book on Antarctic plankton and two major BTEC diplomas in remote biological surveys and tropical conservation. He is an experienced commercial diver, diving instructor and powerboat instructor. He is also an enthusiastic lecturer to both scientific and lay audiences. In 2003 Damon was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and is a regular speaker on the RGS regional lecture circuit.

Since 2004, Damon has spent the UK summers mainly involved with UK based diving fieldwork and the UK winters as a lecturer/naturalist on expedition cruise vessels, including voyages in the Indian Ocean with MV Island Sky and in Antarctica on the icebreaker MV Polar Star.

Damon is a co-founder of Pelagial, and coordinates all our research activities and diving courses.
